Lagrein

With South Tyrolean cheese and dumplings

South Tyrol and the neighbouring Trentino are the home of the red Lagrein. It has been grown there since the 16th century. “White Lagrein”, however, appears in a document from 200 years earlier. Researchers still speculate today as to what variety this is. More is known of the origin of the name: the Lagrein was probably named after the Lagarino valley in Trentino. The grape variety is comfortable in warm locations, where it develops a deep colour and intense aromas of wild berries, cherry and violets. On the palate, the wines show themselves with soft acidity and velvety tannins. The spicy notes of barrique development are good for them. If you are looking for a companion for original South Tyrolean speck and cheese dumplings, definitely choose Lagrein. It is also pairs excellently with mature cheese or game.
