Für Geniesser ist die Normandie die Heimat der drei grossen «C». Diese stehen für den Camenbert, den Cidre und den Calvados. Der Calvados ist der prestigeträchtigste aller Apfelbranntweine. Er wird im Hinterland des Ärmelkanals zwischen Le Mont-Saint-Michel und Le Havre aus ausgewählten Apfelsorten angebaut. Exklusive Spezialitäten sind vor allem die jahre-, oder gar jahrzehntelang im Holzfass gereiften Brände, die unter Bezeichnungen wie «Hors d‘Age» oder «X.O.», sowie als Jahrgangs-Abfüllungen auf den Markt kommen.

The French believe that humans are responsible for the quality of the berries, the vine variety for their character, and nature for the quantity.
