The foundation
Johannes Baur (1795-1865) was born in Götzis, Vorarlberg, into a family of humble origin. He trained as a baker, and in 1820, he emigrated toSwitzerland, acquiring Swiss nationality in 1826. Six years later he opened the restaurant "Zum Kirschbaum" in the Marktgasse inZurich.

Although there were a few inns offering lodgings to travellers, none of them was very comfortable. Johannes Baur set new standards with the construction on the Paradeplatz of a luxury hotel, which opened in 1838 with the name "Baur en Ville" (today the "Savoy"). Only six years later, he opened an annex, the hotel "Baur au Lac" with a beautiful view of thelakeofZurich.
